Progress Report of Children Learning Community in August 2014

Dear friends,

In August 2014, the learning activities ran well. The children, the team and I are so grateful for your prayer and support.

On the week I of August 2014, to be exact on Friday, August 8th, 2014, the learning activities began after almost two weeks the children enjoyed Lebaran holiday. Some residents went to their hometown in Central Java and Indramayu, instead the rest were in Cakung and went out after Lebaran.

On the first day learning activities after Lebaran holiday, we prepared cakes and cookies for the children. We have them from the residents. The children enjoyed steamed sticky rice cakes (dodol Cina) with scrapped coconut and some cookies.

On Saturday, August 9th, 2014, we held a bazaar of some secondhand household and clothes that we have from the donor a month ago. Many things sold in the bazaar although the residents usually use all their money on Lebaran celebration.

Alternative Learning Activities

a. Cakung Children Community

The learning activities ran well in August 2014.

The number of the children decreased on Friday, August 8th, 2014 as the first day of learning activities, instead of the learning activities on the second day, on August 9th, 2014.

The number of the children increased due to 8 new participants nearby the learning house, those were on the 0 and 2nd categories. They are from 5 to 8 years old.

The children learning evaluation on the second quarterly curriculum was on Saturday, August 30th, 2014. Not many children followed the evaluation because during the curriculum, some new children participants just involved in July – August 2014 for few weeks.

They who didn’t follow the learning evaluation, still followed the learning activities, in the separate room.

After the activities, the children enjoyed the healthy menu while the facilitators inform the evaluation report. As the rewards, we gave them pencils, colouring pencils, crayons, colouring markers, and milk donated from Ms. Susi Simarangkir.

Thank you very much for the children’s perseverance and for milk support from Ms. Susi Simarangkir, that we have on the right time of the children evaluation. Hopefully this cooperation will continue well.

After some weeks the children learning vegetables planting, they could enjoy their harvest, although not all vegetables could grow. Their harvest were kangkung, while spinach and mustard greens could not survive after some weeks.

Now we are still learning how to plant hydroculture vegetables. The spinach and red spinach are in seedling process.

The life-skill activity for teenagers and mothers in Cakung during this month was still focus in producing the creation from the coffee sachettes. We made some bags and coaster for glasses and still learning to sew the bag inside.

We are gladly receiving your plastic garbages for supporting the income generating program for the teenagers and the mothers of Children Learning Community. Together we move the action of reduce, reuse, and recycled the plastic garbages.

Thank you very much to Sr. Marcelline, OSU who regularly support the recycled materials.

b. Muara Baru Community

In this month, the learning activities ran on the week I and III.

On the week I of August 2014, to be exact on Sunday, August 10, 2014, the learning activity ran well, followed by more children participants. We asked a child from the 2nd category to get involved in the learning activity there as a participant. The learning activity is done in two groups, the first group is the children who aren’t fluently reading, writing, and counting, instead of the second group.

We were glad with the children’s enthusiasm. We brought some Lebaran biscuits for the children after learning. We close it with introducing each other as the part of the children learning confidence. They introducing themselves by standing in the circle of the children. As the reward, we gave biscuits.

We were back home in the evening, after accompany two children learning.

On Sunday III, August 24th, 2014, more children followed the learning activities. After learning, the children played snakes and ladder.

We thank all the collaborative works of the facilitators, the volunteer, the children, and the residents of Cakung and Muara Baru, especially to Mrs Herda, Ms Qori’ah, Ms Uju, Ester, Tino, Mohandri, Indri, and the children coordinator programs.

Bibliotheque

The library activities on this month has done on the 1st and 2nd Tuesdays of August, to be exact on August 5th and 12th, 2014.
Providing the library books as the schedule on August, we did for few days, especially children reading books and reference life-skill books. We provided stationeries and things as well for the library administrative work.

Not all children reading books that we bought new, some were secondhand books but in good condition.

The administrative works is done once a week out of the learning activity scheduled every Friday and Saturday. We manage the time of library activity and life-skill activity by turns so the team could focus more in finishing their assignment.

Thank you very much for the attention, support, and the perseverance of the coordinator and her team, who faithfully spent the time to do the assignment.

Nutrition Improvement Program for Children

In August 2014, the program ran well.
Besides drinking milk every Saturday, the healthy menus were hardboiled eggs, oranges, plain spinach corn soup, and cincau syrup drink.

On the first Saturday of August 2014, the healthy menu wasn’t fulfilled due to Lebaran holiday, while on the second Friday of August 2014 as the first day of the learning activity began, we prepared steamed sticky rice (dodol Cina) with scrapped coconut and cookies. The children enjoyed the menu together, still in Lebaran spirit.

On the second Saturday of August 2014, the children ate hardboiled eggs which usually eaten with soyasauce or sprinkle salt.
On the third Friday of August 2014, the children enjoyed oranges which more vendors in Cakung sell this fruits for few months. The children love to eat oranges while some choose to suck the fruits.

On the fourth Saturday of August 2014, the children enjoyed plain spinach corn soup with corn croquettes. Mrs. Danik’s attendance in the preparation and the cooking process was so helpful. Because of too much corn, we add another menu; corn croquettes. Different from the previous years, where the children didn’t like the menu, now more children begin to love eating vegetables, moreover adding with corn croquettes. Some children brought rice to eat with the healthy menu.

Thank you very much to Mrs. Danik’s attention and support in the cooking process. We are so glad for the attendance and spending time with us.

On the fifth Friday of August 2014, we didn’t have time to make cincau jelly. We have cincau leaves from the resident nearby, and because of her kindess, we have more and the children could taste cincau jelly a day ahead after we process it and put cincau jelly in the fridge. On Saturday, the children taste the fresh drink of syrup, ice, and cincau jelly.

Thank you very much to the team and the facilitators who organised the healthy menu and cooked it in August 2014.

Children Scholarship

The school activity began in the early August 2014 after Lebaran holiday.

In August 2014, the expenditures were still focusing on providing school uniform, such as batik uniform, which have to sew outside, scouts’ attribute, and student books, also stationeries.

It’s different from a year ago, where the school needs were not much for the scholarship students in elementary and junior high schools. Now, the needs were higher for them, especially in high school and vocational high school.

All public high school students in Jakarta oblige to cover their notebooks with the metallic and plastic covers. The expenditures were also including a sport shoes for a vocational high school student, printer ink, and sheets. The class assignment have to do by searching the information by internet, so the scholarship students use the computers and a printer in the learning house.

The scholarship students have to search information by internet using credit pulse in their mobile phone, where the school obliges the students to use smart phone or netbook.

We provided the need of musical instrument from the students of elementary and junior high school because there were some problems since they bought few years ago.

On this month, the scholarship expenditure was in providing the students weekly accommodation as well.

We are gladly receiving the support of elementary until high school’s student books. Let’s together support the children for preparing their future.

We are so grateful to our friends who would like to support the program regularly. We hope the collaboration will continue well and become the worth provide for the children’s future.
