Progress Report of Children Learning Community in September 2015

Dear friends,

The Children Learning Community is very grateful for your support and prayer. All activities ran smoothly throughout the month.

Instead of the end of August 2015, the Cakung’s children completed the Second Quarter review in the beginning week of September, on Friday, 4 September 2015.

The children completed their Second Quarter review well. The review test covered all the past second quarter’s subjects and also mental skill such as puzzle and word games. For the Third Category, the children were asked to take turn reading a general knowledge article from Bobo, the children magazine. After reading they post questions to each other.

The result was announced on Saturday, 5 September 2015. The review was based on the children’s attitude, diligence, intelligence and teamwork. After receiving the result, the children were rewarded with presents. Children with the highest result got special present.

In the second week September 2015, we had a chance to do our outdoor activity involving both the children of Sarang Tupai and Cakung community. Actually, the activity was supposed to be scheduled in July or August but it was postponed until Saturday, 12 September 2015. We took the children to the National Monument.

We set the budget for this trip. Before the day of the trip, we gathered information about the expense needed including the value of entry pass to go into the National Monument and other sites.

On the day of the trip, the children were coming to National Monument with their own facilitators. With the help of big sister Vera and Lisa, the children gathered in the open area, inside the Monument.

The children of Sarang Tupai were accompanied by big sister Ivonne. To take them out of Sarang Tupai village, they rented a mini wagon and continued their journey with commuter train to Jakarta. They got off at Juanda Train Stop, Central Jakarta and walked shortly to the Monument. Some of Sarang Tupai’s children were excited about this trip. It was their first time riding the commuter train.

The Cakung’s children went to National Monument by riding a bus. The children were accompanied by big sister Debby and Soni’s mother. The bus is owned by Mrs. Herna Rusli. She was generous to lend it that day.
A few minutes before 9 am, we arrived in National Monument’s entrance. After purchasing the entry ticket and finding ourselves a tour guide, we entered the site.

The children found many interesting things in the site. They went up to the top of the monument and found the spectacular view of Jakarta. They looked at the view through the set up binocular in the four corners of the observatory point.

Down on the base structure of the monument, we found the Liberty Museum. We visited the museum and listened to our first president, Soekarno, reading the declaration of independence. We also observed the 3D miniature figurine portraying the struggle for the independence.

After the trip, we took a group picture and headed to the parking lot by ridding a shuttle. Finally we had lunch in the nearby cafeteria.

The children and some of their parents gathered and enjoyed their lunch. To crunch their thirst, they had clod water with their lunch.

After lunch, we took the city tour bus which already packed with visitors. Because of limited space in the bus, only several children had a chance to go on city tour. Big sister Debby accompanied these children. In our way, we met big sister, Ari, who was on her way to work.

Going back home, we took the buses. They were provided by Mrs. Herna and her staff. With spacious sits in the bus, the children really enjoyed their trip back. We were grateful, nobody got sick during the trip.

While waiting for our turn to continue the bus journey home, we took group pictures in front of the bus. We had to wait on the roadside for about one hour before the policeman let us into the Puncak road.

We thank Mrs. Ita for her lunch donation. We were grateful to the Cakung’s mothers who cooked and prepared the lunch for our children. We thank Mrs. Herna and her staff for helping Cakung’s and Sarang Tupai’s children with comfortable bus.

In the middle of September 2015, we had visitors. Big brother Sak, the participant of live-in program few months ago, took two of his friend big brother Bosco and Frances to Cakung. Every Saturday, these two visitors helped the children with their study.

The children appreciated their kind friendship. We hope that the visitation motivate the children to study harder. We also hope that we can continue our relationship for many similar programs ahead.

Because many incidents of child abuse lately, we initiate to have a short course of sexual conduct for Cakung’s and Sarang Tupai’s children.

In the beginning of 2015, most of Cakung’s children have received this short course which leads by big sister Angie and her team. It is now the Sarang Tupai’s turn to receive this course.

On Tuesday, 29 September 2015, the Sarang Tupai’s young adult received this short course leads by big sister Angie, Katrin, Dita and Mrs. Kusni.

The activity was taken in the afternoon. Many small children were reluctant to come. They were afraid that they might get injections. Our initial plan was also to bring the medical doctor in this activity. We planned to have a doctor spoke about hygiene and healthy living.

The children were very enthusiast with this activity. The leaders started the activity with games. They delivered the course presentation with pictures and short movies. The children learned about many parts of their body, including their private parts.

They learned to protect themselves from others and to overcome sexual misconduct.

Mrs. Kusni explained to the boys about male body and to the girls about female body using the anatomy map.

The presentation was delivered in the interactive manner. The children were free to ask question and stated their opinion about the subject.

We deeply thank big sister Angie, Dita, Karin and Mrs. Kusni for this activity. We hope that we can continue this type of program in the future.

We hope that this activity will bring up the children’s awareness to the dangerous of sexual misconduct around them.

We thank many friends who contribute their time, energy, financial and space to support this learning activity.

Thank you to facilitators, volunteers, program coordinators, the community of Cakung and Sarang Tupai, including Indri, Ester, Ondo, Jaka, Mrs. Sutini, big sister Vera, big brother Bosco and Frances in Cakung and big sister Ivonne and Novi in Sarang Tupai.

We thank Sr.Marcelline, OSU who continuously collecting those left over coffee packs.

We accept any recycle materials which are main component for the young girls and mothers to do crafting.

Let us all support the movement to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic garbage in our surrounding.

We thank Tiffany Halim and Mrs. Retno for donation of school text books. We received those books through Mrs. July Dharmasuka.

We thank big sister Dini for donation of coloring books and story books for smaller children.

Those text books that we have received, we grouped them according to the school grade. We encouraged the children and their parents to take some books according to their children’s school grade. We have distributed those books to Cakung. Meanwhile for Sarang Tupai, because of their rural location, we could only take them in a small amount at a time. Using public transportation, each facilitator can bring small amount of books when their making their visit to Sarang Tupai.

This month, we will be able to do the nutrition improvement program accordingly.

In Cakung, the children were able to enjoy their milk every Saturday. Beside, hard-boiled egg, for this month, we provided the children with fruits such as oranges, watermelons and tomatoes.

In Sarang Tupai, the children had oranges, snake fruit and various cookies that we purchased in Ciawi market.

We emphasize more on giving the children nutritious fruits during this dry season.

We thank the facilitator and big sister Ivonne’s family who help preparing healthy menu for the children.

The scholarship expenses in the month of September include school materials such as batik uniform, printing papers, the photocopies of lesson material, text books, monthly school fee, children’s transportation and English tutor for all the recipients.
