Progress Report of Children Learning Community in January 2016

Dear friends,

We are grateful to God and to our loyal friends who supported the activity of children learning community throughout January 2016.

The Children Learning Community gathered for New Years’ celebration on Saturday, 2 January 2016 in Sarang Tupai’s facility, Ciawi. Some Cakung’s children could not attend the celebration because they were still on holiday with their family.

Although there were heavy clouds and light shower, we gathered and played together. The children enjoyed seeing their class mates.

We prepared charcoal grill for barbequing corn and sausages. Children also enjoyed fried chickens that were battered before with flour and various spices.

Sad news in the beginning of January as we learned that Mrs Wasti, Firman’s grandmother has passed away at noon on Thursday, 7 January 2016. For few years, Mrs Wasti was staying at Cakung’s facility. One of her duty was to care for the facility. Mrs Wasti who suffered from diabetic, passed at the age of 60, after falling ill for three days.

Our heart went to Firman. It must have been devastating for him after all he was living with his grandmother for many years.

We buried Mrs Wasti according to the Islamic faith on that same day. Many loving neighbors came and contributed their pray, effort and money. We thank for the kindness and solidarity of Cakung’s community.

To commemorate the passing of Mrs Wasti, the Islam prayer recital was conducted daily for seven days. They meant to guide her soul to eternity in heaven.

Firman now is left by himself. We decided to have the facilitators, big brother Jaka, big sister Indri, and Mrs Sutini, to care for his needs and daily meal.

We watched his mood constantly, especially during bed time. He often cried. Firman was used to sleep with the late grandmother. In order to forget the sadness, Firman often played with the neighbor kids.

We broke the sad news to the children during learning hours. Children were lined up to comfort Firman. On Saturday, 9 January 2016, the children collected their money for day saving. They gave them all to Firman.

On Saturday, 16 January 2016, we conducted back the exchange gift program to celebrate New Year. This program was coordinated by the late big sister Chichie in 2009. The program was halted for a while before we resurrected it back this year.

After learning, the children were grouped according to their category for gift exchange. For some students, this was their first experience doing gift exchange. The category three and four students have already familiarized with this program.

A three years boy was in tears when his gift was taken by other student. He was sad seeing his gift was taken by someone else. He was confused for not being able to get his own gift. He was not familiar with this program. His parents and facilitators tried to calm him down and let the boy chose a gift for himself.

On Tuesday, 19 January 2016, we had visitors. The visitors were fifteen students from Kolose De Britto High School who conducted their live in program. They came with their teacher to live with the community of Cakung.

The activity was conducted from Tuesday noon, 19 January 2016 to Friday noon, 22 January 2016.

The students took group pictures, before going to live with their assign house and took other pictures with the children before leaving Cakung community.

We are grateful to the High School De Britto live in team for their trust in us. We thank Rm John, SJ, Fr Paulus, SJ, teachers and all the live in students. We hope that this cooperation will go further.

Throughout January 2016, the learning activity in Sarang Tupai and Cakung ran very well.

Some of Sarang tupai were getting their price for December 2015’s diligent effort in learning and attendance.

Even though, there was only small numbers of children attend Sarang Tupai and Cakung learning center in the beginning of January, the children were very enthusiast to learn and read.

We thank the facilitators, volunteers and surround community for their time, effort, finance and place to learn. We thank Jaka, Mrs Sutini, Ester, Indri, big brother Bosco and big brother Frances in Cakung; big sister Ivonne, Novi, Cantik and Pagi in Sarang Tupai, Megamendung, Ciawi.

By the middle of January, the number of Cakung’s children increased. The learning hall looked smaller since many of the children were actively moved.

During the meal time in that very tight space, we can see some kids tease other kids.

The healthy menu in January includes milk cookies and fruits such as oranges, snake fruit, rambutan, and watermelon.

Because of tight space in Cakung, we have to distribute the food in several batches. As you can see in the picture, the category zero and one students were enjoying oranges for dessert while waiting for the other batch to finish their meal,.

After they were done eating, we continue with children from category 2, 3 and 4. A few boys, who like to tease other children, ate last as their punishment. They learn to line up quietly for their dessert. After we call their name, they can get their oranges and do the farewell greetings.

The Christmas New Year’s donation in form of basic staple food packages from Marsudirini Elementary school Matraman, East Jakarta were received by us through. Mrs Eka Mei. We are grateful for your kindness and attention to us. We hope we continue this cooperation further.

Finally, we are grateful to the facilitators, Cakung’s Child Nutrition Improvement team, Sarang Tupai’s team and the family of big sister Ivonne who help us in preparing and serving that healthy diet and the 2016 new menu.

School activity was formally started on Monday, 4 January 2016.

The January’s expense includes lesson photocopies, internet fee, tuition fee, school transportation and English tutor.

We are grateful to the Laftavis who through the Tonteys has continuously provided their financial support for this scholarship program. We hope that the support that was given will be valuable to the future life of these children.
