Progress Report of Children Learning Community on April 2014

Dear friends,

Happy Easter 2014
May the resurrection of Jesus Christ renew our spirit and faith to always bring His example of Love and Faithful.


During April 2014, the alternative education of Children Learning Community could run well, thanks for your prayer and support.

On the week III of April 2014, to be exact on Saturday, April 19th, 2014, we celebrated the birthday of a student of Marsudirini elementary school; Antonio, who came with his parents and his sister, Ms. Eka as his teacher with Mr. Wanda, also some friends with their parents. Antonio’s parents would like to celebrate their son’s birthday in Cakung recommended by Ms. Eka.

Few days before, we prepared the decorations for the birthday party and a day before, we put them in the front room and in the terrace. On the day, Ms. Eka opened and lead the celebration. There are many children came, either the active participants of learning activity or the passive ones. The children played some games. They were enjoy the party. After singing and eating the birthday cake, Antonio and his families gave lunch box and goodie bag to each child. At the end of the party, Antonio and his friends visited the farm area where some Cakung residents work. Some are demolished yet. Antonio and his friends learned to know where the people plant some vegetables, which usually not known by the children who live in the city and they learned the changes which always happen as the consequence of the development of the big city with big population.

We were so thankful to Ms. Eka and Mr. Wanda also Antonio’s family who would like to celebrate this happy day of their son with the children of Cakung.

We thank Ms. Eka and Mr. Wanda for collecting the support from Alam Sutra residents on Easter celebration. We hope the cooperation will continue well.

On Saturday evening, April 26th, 2014, after the children learning evaluation, we held the meeting of cooperation which has in the third year.

The meeting run as usual but this day, it ended with the vote of the coordinator and the treasurer, while the previous coordinator and treasurer have task to keep the cashbox and the key. All the cooperation member have some deal to renew some rules, as increasing the amount of debt with some installment, the requirement to save money every month and the sanction for inactive member.

There are 15 members and still open for the residents. The credit cooperation is helping the residents providing the family needs, for financial capital of their work and for their children’s school need.

Alternative Learning Activities

a. Cakung Children Community


The learning activities could run well.

In the early April of 2014, we held the monthly meeting of program activities. The meeting is held to know the progress and to enable and increase the responsibility of the children. They learn how to organize the activities.

At the end of April 2014, to be exact on Saturday, April 26th, 2014, we held the 1st quarterly children learning evaluation in Cakung. Not all children could follow the evaluation based on some criterias, such as the absency and the ability of the children during the 1st quarterly learning. There were 25 children following the evaluation, while the rest were reading the library books and learning counting in the same room.
After the learning evaluation, we give them some rewards for their success and some notes for all of the children for increasing the spirit of learning and for better attitude. We gave them books and stationeries.

b. The Muara Baru Community

During this month, the learning activities are held twice a month, on the week II and the week IV.
The learning activities could run well and held in two groups; the children who aren’t able reading, writing, counting, and another group who are able. The first group facilitated by Indri and Nia, while another by Ms. Debby. The learning activity began in the afternoon until evening.
On the week II of April 2014, we invited a child of the 3rd category to learn facilitating the children of Muara Baru. For the next learning activity, we will adjust the children of the 3rd category to learn facilitating the younger children, especially in Muara Baru.
We thank all the collaborative works among the facilitators, the volunteers, the children and the residents of Cakung and Muara Baru, especially to Mrs. Herda at Muara Baru, Ms. Qori’ah, Ms. Uju, Indri, Esther, Mohandri, and the children coordinator program.

Bibliotheque

During this month, the library activity was taking care and managing the library books registered of 2009 and 2010.
The schedule of the administrative works which run by the team, since March 2014 is every Thursday and continue on Friday, after the learning activities.
Finally we are thankful for the attention and the perseverance of the team.

Nutrition Improvement Program for Children

On April 2014, the program could run well.

Besides drinking milk every Saturday, the healthy menus were rainbow cassava cakes, tomato slices with sprinkled sugar, and the special menu of Easter; hard boiled egg into the nest.

The healthy menu on the first Saturday of April 2014 was rainbow cassava cakes, which change from steamed cassava scraped coconut. Mrs. Danik as the cooking facilitator came on that day and advice the children to learn the new menu from cassava.

The coordinator was supporting by the children of the 3rd category cooking the cassava which had been scraped and adding the powder of seaweed gelatin. After steamed until done, the rainbow cassava cakes deserved with scraped coconut. The scraping process isn’t done too long because the children went to the producer of scrapped coconut near the learning house to scrapping the cassava and the coconut with a special machine.

The children were so happy to learn and taste the new menu.

The healthy menu on the second Friday of April 2014 was tomatoes with sprinkled sugar. The children become used to eat fruit and like this menu. On the third Saturday of April 2014, there wasn’t any healthy menu because of Easter holiday, but the children came to the learning house celebrating the birthday party of Antonio and his friends from Marsudirini elementary school. The children ate cakes and have lunch boxes with goody bags.

On the fourth Friday of April 2014, the team prepared the special menu of hard boiled egg with the nest from the fried ricenoodle. The children made the soup of carrot, mushroom, celery, and some spices. The children love this new special menu. Usually we celebrate Easter with coloring and decorating hardboiled egg.

Before enjoy the healthy menu, every child greeted the children who celebrate Easter in a long line. The children learn the meaning of tolerance and harmony in faiths although the government cause the injustice and discriminate the people of other faiths.

Thank you very much to Mrs. Danik who would love to share the simple and tasty menu. We hope you would like to spare time to teach again and hope the cooperation will continue well.
Finally, we thank the team who organised the healthy menu and cooked it during April 2014.

Children Scholarship

In the early April 2014, a volunteer who few years ago become a participant of the 4th category, went with the facilitator to Cinta Anak Bangsa Foundation for finding more information about the school certified program for younger and older people who wants to pursue the education. He dropped out in the 1st year of vocational high school because of family matters.

He accompanies the children of the 0 and 2nd category learning. He has a strong desire to continue his formal school. Based on our evalution of him and his mother’s responsibility to ensure her son, we try to give him opportunity back to school. He still think to decide to follow the school certified program or back to his vocational high school after left for a year.

A child with good marks and active in school organization, wants to continue her study to the vocational high school. She has a good wish to support her mother as a single parent. For few months, she accompanies the children of the 0 category learning. We intend to support her education. Few years ago, she is a participant of the 3rd and the 4th category.

To enter the new school year, we have to prepare ourselves for adding two children to have scholarship. Now the scholarship students become 4 and 1 who supported us in her learning materials.

We hope you give us permission and support for adding 2 children in the scholarship program.

On this month, the scholarship expenditures were in providing the school needs such as copy learning materials, monthly fee of swimming of a junior highschool student, internet pulse for modem, the travel for a campus student in study-group, also the students weekly accommodation.

We are so grateful to our friends who would like to support the program regularly. We hope the collaboration will continue well and become the worth provide for the children’s future.

May 2014 Activity Plans

1. Learning Activities
a. The learning activity run every Friday and Saturday from 12 PM til 3.30 PM.
b. The life-skill activity run every Tuesday from day til afternoon in the learning house.
c. Usaha Mandiri Activity as the income generating program for the teenagers and the mothers, has opportunity to follow the bazaar of St. Yakobus elementary school on Saturday, May 10th, 2014. We sell the creations such as paper quilling cards, beads creation such as rosary, necklace, bracelet, and coffee sachets creation such as coaster for glasses & bowls, purse, and pencil case.

2. The Nutrition Improvement Program for Children
a. Providing the healthy menu and purchasing milk, also providing the kitchenware.

3. Bibliotheque
a. Registering and taking care all the library books also manage them in the bookshelves, especially the registered books from 2011 til 2014.

4. Scholarship
a. Midsemester tests for a campus student on the early May of 2014.
b. Providing the registration fee for 2 students, as volunteers in Cakung, to enroll technic highschool and pharmacy highschool.
