Progress Report of Children Learning Community in May 2016

Dear friends,

The Children Learning Community is very grateful for your supports and prayers. All activities ran smoothly throughout the month of May 2016.

The number of children learning in Sarang Tupai, Ciawi, grew rapidly. Big sister Novi, Rachel, Cantik, Dian, and Pagi devoted their times to accompany these children. Because of growing number of participants, we are now short of folding desk. On top of that, all of the existing folding desks’ wooden legs were broken.

The children learned to sing national anthem and made a miniature flags from coloring papers and straws.

Cakung’s children took advantage in sharpening their mathematics and English with big brother More and Gomez from Timor Leste, East Timor. They came with big brother Bosco on Saturday afternoon, 21st May 2016.

Part of building up confidence, the children introduced themselves and gave speech in front of their peers.

We thank facilitators, volunteers and surrounding community who relentlessly gave their time, efforts, finances and place for this learning program. We thank Jaka, Ester, Ondo, big sister Lucy, big brother Bosco, More and Gomez in Cakung. We also thank big sister Ivonne, Novi, Cantik, Dian, and Pagi in Sarang Tupai, Megamendung, Ciawi.

We prepared variety of healthy menu throughout the month of May 2016. In Cakung, we had simple cassava dish such as “misro”, deep fried mash cassava fill with brown sugar; “bom”, round mash sweet potatoes with brown sugar inside; “nagasari”, steam powder rice fill with banana and wrap with banana leave; fruit cocktail with syrup; also rice cake and vegetable coconut milk soup which are made by Cakung parents. In Sarang Tupai, parents also prepared fruit cocktail fill with slices of papaya and melon; fried sweet potatoes and cookies.

We thank all facilitators and the nutritious improvement team in Sarang Tupai as well as in Cakung. We also thank big sister Ivonne and her family who prepare and serve the healthy meal in Sarang Tupai.

School’s expenditure in May was increased due to transportation allowances for some of Junior High students in Sarang Tupai We investigated this issue by observing Yanti, a Junior High Student, who gradually missed her learning class. Later on, we found out that she also had been absence from school for more than a month. We finally realized that she did not have any transportation money to go to school. We also discovered that other student, Marina, also faced the same issue.

After supporting them with transportation allowances, now, they are able to go back to school.

We also assisted an Ambonese student from a family who fleed to Ciawi, out of religious clash in Ambon. We assisted this student with school needs and High School’s entry tuition.

Several Sarang Tupai children are also applying for scholarship program. To determine their eligibility, we need to interview their parents.

We also successfully found a one roof facility for a scholarship recipient. This Cakung’s scholarship recipient now is able to get a shelter and an education at Elementary School in Sindanglaya, West Java. We prioritized his future; therefore we decided to move him to a quality school with an orphanage in the premises.

The school’s expenditure throughout this month includes two month advance monthly tuition for Elementary and Technical High School students. The advance tuition for these schools was paid as requirement before final examinations.

We also provided the students with internet fee, school material’s photocopies, school transportation allowance, school needs and other transportation allowance for students to reach distance extracurricular facility.

We are grateful to our friends who continuously provide their financial support for this scholarship program. This scholarship’s support is extremely valuable for the children’s future.

June 2016 Plan :

1. Learning Activity

a. In the 1st week of June, Sarang Tupai and Cakung’s children will enjoy their holiday to welcome Moeslem’s fasting month, the Ramadhan.

She lost her home and place of business during riot. This year activity is collaboration between teenagers and young mothers of Sarang Tupai and teenagers and young mothers of Cakung.
