Progress Report of Children Learning Community in January 2015

Dear Friends,

www.holidaypictures.com

Happy New Year 2015.
May the new year bring you grace, joy and peace.

Children Learning Community is very grateful for your support and prayers in January 2015. All activities were functioning smoothly throughout the month.

After the long festive holiday, learning activities in all categories were finally started rolling back on Friday, January 9, 2015. A few days, before kicking off these activities, all facilitators were gathered for evaluation and preparation on the curriculum implementation.

On Saturday, January 3, 2015, facilitators gathered at the learning house to celebrate Christmas and the New Year. They exchanged presents. The gathering ended with the announcement of new organization structure for 2015 activities.

On Saturday, January 17, 2015, at the end of learning time, we held a commemoration prayer in memory of the 2nd year passing of our big sister, Sarah Laftavi. Activity was opened with a moment of prayer by one of the children. We proceeded with distribution of healthy meals, snacks and milk to all the children.

Meanwhile in Muara Baru, the commemoration program was held on Sunday, January 18, 2015.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Laftavis for their financial support on this program.

We pray for the forgiveness of sin and eternal rest at the house of the Lord. We remember her as a role model. Her dedication strengthens us. Her enthusiasm brings energy to the children to move forward.

On Monday morning, on January 19, 2015, we had some visitors from SMA Kolose De Britto, a catholic high school. These sophomore students came from Jogjakarta to do their “live in exposure”, a mandatory program required by their school. These students are accompanied by their teacher, Ms Tika. The program is taken place until Friday, January 23, 2015.

Every year since 2012, many De Britto high school students are participated in this program. For a few days, they learn to live and experience the livelihood of a marginal community.

On Thursday, January 22, 2015, Romo John SJ, the vice principle of De Britto high school together with Frater Paulus Nugroho SJ, the coordinator of the “live in exposure” program in Jakarta and several teachers visited our learning center. They came to see our facilities and observed our activities.

We are grateful for the trust and support from SMA Kolose De Britto, Jogjakarta. We value their confidence in us. We hope to maintain this relationship and to develop future cooperation.

On Friday, January 23, 2015, we attended the wedding of our big sister Uju. Uju has been with us since she was a child. She was a former student before turning into a facilitator. She is now facilitating children in category 2 at our Cakung facility. We went to the wedding together with children, parents and friends in the community.

We wish for this newlywed happiness. We pray that they will be living in peace and harmony.

On Tuesday, January 27, 2015, together with a facilitator, we conducted a survey for the next children community learning project in west Jakarta. We met Mr. Hasanuddin and Mr. Ari. We exchanged information and discussed possible location for the project.

We hope to establish and develop our next project in the needed community next year and for a useful facility and an effective learning service for the needed community. We ask for your prayers and support on this project.

The Alternative Learning Activities

a. Cakung Children Community

Throughout January 2015, the alternative learning activities ran well.

Learning activities resumed on Friday, January 9, 2015. The children filled with joy of going back to class despite several who entered late.

In January 2015, we implemented the curriculum. We studied each child’s progress review. The progress review then determined the category level of each child. In first quarter this year, we have some changes in categories. Some participants were able to advance to higher category level, while some remain in the same category level.

We are grateful to several communities and organizations for their support in gathering recycled coffee packs. We are very thankful to the monastic community of Saint Mary, in Juanda Road for their faithful support. We are also indebted to Cakung community and facilitators for their effort. Our thanks also to big sister, Lucy and friends from the Indonesian Conference on Religion and Peace (ICRP) for those colorful recycled coffee packs. We hope that you will continue to support our program with recycled coffee packs.

We open to any friends who are willing to collect and donate recycled rubbish. This rubbish is still valuable for us. Mothers and teenagers can learn to create many wonderful things out of this rubbish. Together, we also support global movement of reduce, reuse and recycle plastic rubbish.

b. Muara Baru Community

Due to heavy schedule of the curriculum plan and preparation, we were only able to do our activity on Sunday, January 18, 2015, the third week of the month. Finally, we completed the entire curriculum planning at the end of January and kicked off the first quarter of learning in Muara Baru.

Activities are divided into three groups. Facilitators of that group are big sister Indri, Nia and Debby.

We are thankful to volunteers, facilitators, children, parents, Cakung community and the Muara Baru community for their cooperation. We also express our gratitude to big sister Uju, big sister Thesa, Mohandri, Indri, Ester, Tino, all the program officers and Ms. Herda in Muara Baru.

Library

The library opened in Thursday, January 8, 2015. Before the opening, we organized all the books by their publishing the year and placed them in book cases.

We also decided to prepare mandatory reading books on Thursday, a day before Friday learning. This activity is to avoid interference with regular Friday and Saturday learning days.

Throughout January, we were registering all the donation books. We started registering these books back in November 2014. These books are then displayed in shelves.

We are grateful to the previous library team. We welcome the new 2015 team. We wish a good luck to Nia, the team coordinator, Ester, Ondo and Indri on their new duty.

Children Nutritional Improvement Activities

This weekly Saturday activity resumes on the second week of January. On Saturday, January 10, 2015, children enjoyed “sunny side up” egg on top of their rice. Children like this menu, especially the freshly cooked “sunny side up” dish serve with warm rice and sweet soy sauce.

On the third Saturday in January, children enjoyed snake fruit. The fruit was distributed before praying in memory of the 2nd year passing of our big sister Sarah Laftavi. On the fourth Saturday, children enjoyed tofu and beef stew with rice. Children like the tender cooked meat in the stew. This is their first time eating beef stew.

On the fifth Saturday, the nutritional improvement team prepared green bean porridge with slices of boiled banana. This warm dish is perfect for the gloomy, rainy seasons.

We are thankful to the 2015 children nutritional improvement team. We are grateful to Indri, the team coordinator with her team mates, Ester, Nia and Tino. We are also grateful to mothers and facilitators. They also helped us in preparing those healthy dishes.
