Progress Report of Children Learning Community in December 2018

Dear friends,

Children Learning Community wishes you,

A Merry Christmas 2018 and Happy New Year 2019
We hope the birth of Savior brings peace into our heart, fuel our spirit to strive for the best in 2019.

We are grateful to God for His blessing throughout 2018. We arrive at the year 2019 with joy and brand new hope.

We are grateful to God and to our loyal friends who supported the children learning community activities. The activities run smoothly at Cakung and Sarang Tupai, Ciawi

The children and communities have been through up and down time together. They made them sharp, more reflective and wise in facing challenges.

On Friday, at the 7th of December 2018, big sister Angie and her team leaded a short seminar on “Developing Positive Characters in Children” .

Year after year, we do this program. The objective is to prevent bullying among the children. We usually do the program after quarterly review.

Sixteen of Cakung’s children attended this program.

With the help of big brother Ucok and big sister Tere, big sister Angie led this program.

We opened the program by introducing all the facilitators to the children. To warm up, big brother Ucok asked the children to join him to play several games. The children were enjoying themselves, and a bond formed between them. Later after children got into the mood of learning, facilitators started to tell a fable about the friendship of a turtle, a monkey and a pony.

The children learned about their own body and the benefits of each part, such as using their hands to cook, to help others and so on. They drew the anatomy of the human body, mimicking their own body. They decorated each body parts with colors and name the benefits that they could use with each body part. They named the human body with their own names. They projected themselves on their drawings.

After learning about themselves, they turned their heads to their friends’ drawings. After that children were given a large drawing of a tree. They were asked to stick heart shaped colored sticky pads to the tree branches.

In those heart shaped colored sticky notes, children asked to write down any complements and good deeds to their friend.

All the children’s trees were filled up with the heart shaped colored sticky notes with written compliments and good deeds.

The children were excited to do this exercise.

At the end of the program, big sister Angie reminded back the children of what they have learned. She reminded them about how they should act towards others. Such as the kinds of things that make them good and about bad things that they need to refrain from doing.

We thanked big sister Angie for this program. It motivated the children to be better people to their friends.

Before finishing the program, we took a group picture. After that, the children lined up for hand shaking while we distributed goodie bags containing one small carton of milk and some cookies.

On the 8th of December 2018, we had short seminar for teenagers on sexual education. Big sister Alveni conducted this program in big sister Ivonne’s home in Ciawi. There were 31 Sarang Tupai’s and some Cakung’s teenagers attended the seminar that day.

Sarang Tupai’s community was more accepting to the children learning program. It truly shows from increasing number of teenagers who attended this seminar.

With easy access of internet and communication through mobile phone and electronic devices, we were eager to develop a creative and right way to build awareness among teenagers especially about their sexuality.

We were excited to see some of Cakung’s teenagers among the participants that day.

The activity started at 11 AM and finished at lunch hour.

The theme of this seminar was “Sexuality – Body, mind and soul”. Big sister Alvie was the speaker of this theme.

Some Sarang Tupai’s teenagers known big sister Alvieni from previous seminars. Meanwhile, for many of Cakung’s teenagers, this was their first time attending this type of seminar with big sister Alvieni this year.

Big sister Alvieni introduced herself. And teenagers also encouraged to introducing each other.

Teenagers learned to recognize their own body, their sexuality and their senses growing up.

They understood changes in their body. They learned about human development, genders, etc.

They learned to know the difference between man and woman. They were encouraged to indicate changes in human body. With tools such as sticky note and human body’s diagram, teenagers were encouraged to write the changes in men and women on a human body’s diagram.

Children also watched a short movie about development human embryo inside woman’s body.

We hope to build awareness among teenagers especially with their body. Teenagers learned to be responsible with their sexuality.

After program, we had lunch together. Cakung’s and Ciawi’s mother prepared delicious meals for us to enjoy.

We took group pictures. We said thank to big sister Alvie for her time and dedication to teenagers.

We also thank the Cakung’s and Ciawi’s mothers for preparing us lunch and snacks.

We thank big sister Linda Indra, big brother Kurnia Setiawan, big sister Camilla, Mrs. Tjandra, Sister Lucia, OSU, and big sister Daisy S. Ningtyas for their financial support for this program.

On Wednesday at the 19th of December 2018, Mr. Sobar and Mr. Adi came from Bogor to visit.

They wanted to see the children and the activity in Sarang Tupai.

The children were happy to have visitors to their village. They introduced themselves and sang a few songs for them. They chatted with the children and us. They asked the children and their needs. They gave us milk and snacks.

We took a group picture before saying goodbye.

The children and the community of Sarang Tupai were grateful for the care and attention from Mr. Sobar and Mr. Adi.

We were also excited to join Sr. Annunciata, OSU and elderly Sisters of Ursulin Sisterhood in Juanda Street, Jakarta. We were there on the 25th of December 2018 to share the joy of Christmas with them.

Sr. Annunciata, OSU was our great mentor in handicraft skill. It was a reunion for us since Sr. Annunciata of OSU was involved in teaching Cakung’s facilitators at the beginning stage of Cakung’s Children Learning Community.

She is now 92 years old and still good in communicating with us and her new granddaughter and grandson.

We were grateful to spend time with her. We pray for her health and happy time.

In the first week of December 2018, we reviewed Cakung’s children for 3rd quarter performance. At the same week, we decided to give Ciawi’s children their break earlier for their school’s tests and after the short seminars.

Mrs. Mar’ah, big sister Indri, big brother Ludo, and big sister Debby assisted the reviews of Cakung’s children. Meanwhile big sister Lenny, Mrs. Ruth, Mrs. Vera, Jagad’s mother, and big sister Debby assisted the reviews of Sarang Tupai’s children.

We thanked facilitators, volunteers and surrounding community who gave their time and efforts,
