Progress Report of Children Learning Community in August 2016

Dear friends,

The Children Learning Community is very grateful for your supports and prayers. All activities in Cakung and Sarang Tupai ran smoothly throughout the month of August 2016.

New attendants gradually came to both Cakung’s and Sarang Tupai’s facility. They filled all learning stages, but majority of them attended stage 1 and stage 2.

We had annually outdoor event that is meeting all participants, parents and facilitators. Parents were anxious to wait for this event and to know how much money savings that usually they take especially for the event.

We thank facilitators, volunteers and surrounding community who relentlessly gave their time, efforts, finances and place for this learning program. We thank Jaka, Ester and Ziya in Cakung. We also thank big sister Ivonne, Neldi, Cantik and Pagi in Sarang Tupai, Megamendung, Ciawi.

On Saturday, on the 6th of August 2016, big sister Magda of the “Joy of the Children organization” came to us with activity. The activity’s theme was “The generation of water preservation”. This is one of their joint programs with WWF in which to promote environment awareness among children. Children stage 3 and 4 were actively involved in this program.

Children learned the importance of water, what are the environment hazards that cause water contamination. Children also learned many simple tasks to conserve water at home and their surroundings. With the organization’s personnel, children walked to the closed by place where the garbage scavengers pile their garbage. They observed their surroundings while walking to the garbage collection’s point.

Children learned to identify and separate the bio gradable and the ungradable waste. They sang song and answered questions about what they have learned. They also learned to create nice things out of thrown out drinking plastic bottles.

The activity started at 7 am and finished at 1 pm. Before dismissal, we had lunch and took pictures together.

Children were happy to take pictures with their mentors and receive gifts from the “Joy of the Children” and “WWF” organization.

We thank big sister Magda and all “Joy of Children” and “WWF” personals. With this type of activity, we hope to raise the children’s awareness and curiosity toward environment. We hope our relationship with these two organizations continue further.
One week later, on Friday on the 12th of August 2016, we had our annually outdoor program in Cibodas National Park, West Java. Both Cakung and Sarang Tupai’s children attended this activity.

We thank Mrs. Herna R and her staffs for providing us with bus. We began our journey to Cibodas at 6 am.

The Sarang Tupai children and parents arrived first. Later on the Cakung’s children and their parents arrived. We started the program at 8.30 am.

That day, the children learned in group of three. For one and of half hour, the group has to observe, write and draw the leaf of variety of tree’s species. In this park, all trees have already marked with Latin name, local name and the origin area of the tree.

Parents sat in the corner of the park looking at their children doing their task. After finishing their task around 11 pm, children had their lunch. The Cakung’s parents prepared the lunch.

The facilitators collected all drawing books and color pencils from each group. The result of best group will be announced a week later.

Finally, parents and children can enjoy the park. They were very enthusiast to play in natural water fall pool. With high spirit, they hiked up through the stone stair walks to get to the waterfall.

Parents and children were thrill playing in the waterfall pool. They enjoyed fresh water and moist surround water fall.
We left the waterfall at 2.30 pm and descended back through different way. It took a bit longer to descend but the way back was much wider and obtuse.

Descendent back, the children enjoy looking at tall and large trunk trees. They met pack of monkeys swinging in fruit and banana trees. They also observed small snake under turn over stone. They saw squirrels walking around pine tree branches. They also observed spider and variety of colorful insects.

There are row of fresh vegetable and fruit stalls, next to our bus parking lot. The mothers bought some fruits and vegetables before going back home.

On the way home, we did not face any traffic. The Sarang Tupai’s children arrived home even before sun set, around 5 pm. The Cakung’s children arrived a bit late at 8 pm because of farther distance than Sarang Tupai.

The children and their parents were very happy and grateful with this annual trip.

We thank Mrs, Herna R and her staffs who provide two busses for this trip. Mrs. Herna R has been helping us with this program for many years. We hope our relationship will continue further in the future.

We thank Mrs. Yudith for financial donations. We use this donation to fulfill our lunch and snack during the trip. All lunches and snacks were cooked and prepared by both Sarang Tupai’s and Cakung’s mothers.

We hope our working relationship will continue further.

On Friday and Saturday, on the 26th and 27th of August 2016, we participated in two days bazaar at Saint Mary’s Elementary and Vocational High School.

Besides presenting ourself and craft, the purpose of attending this bazaar was also to raise some money. The teenagers of Cakung and Sarang Tupai’s made this craft and sold them for their own saving and purchase the craft materials.

This month, all the scholarship’s recipients received support for monthly school fee. There was a Vocational High School student in east Jakarta, who received fund for stationaries, writing tablets, and transportation allowance, beside monthly school fee. The transportation allowance was used both for school and for office trip at his three months’ internship in south Jakarta.

We are grateful to our friends who continuously provide their financial support for this scholarship program. This scholarship’s support is extremely valuable for the children’s future.

There were several healthy diets that we prepared for both Cakung’s and Sarang Tupai’s children. Children enjoyed chocolate pudding, fried tofu, stuffed tofu, donuts, cookies, fresh milk and green bean with shaved ice syrup on top.

We thank facilitators and the community of Cakung and Sarang Tupai who help preparing and serving healthy food throughout August 2016.
