NATIONAL RESURGENCE MUSEUM

By Indri

On May 31, 2009, I, Ms.Debby, Ms.Uwie, Ms.Qoriah, Ms.Uju, Yuliyana, & Mala went to National Resurgence Museum. Before we went to, we took the secondhand clothes at Mrs.Kalangi house in Senen, Central Jakarta. We talked to Mrs.Kalangi’s daughter there. Mrs.Kalangi’s house is ancient building from Dutch Imperialism era. She had an ancient tree which more than hundred years. When we went back, we stopped by at a museum near Mrs.Kalangi’s house. That’s museum is Nasional Resurgence Museum. We went inside.

Inside the museum, we fill the guest list, after that, we went around the rooms inside. First of all, we saw the history before Indonesia independence in writing & letters of Dr.Soetomo. The history before Indonesia independence begin from Portuguese imperialism, Dutch imperialism, & Spane. Beside that, there are some historical materials in pictures, replicas, paintings, sculpture, dioramas, scale models, & medical instrument also war material which used by tribe people in Indonesia against imperialism.

We watched a movie inside the audio visual room of the museum. The history of the building is a medical school & boarding house for the student. The film explained about the history of National Resurgence Building which is build since 1899 until 1901. On March 1902, the building is dedicated for STOVIA, medical school for inlander/ natives who came from every area in Indonesia. The students of STOVIA have to live inside the boarding house in this building until finish their school. The students who accept in STOVIA are graduated from European High School in Indonesia.
STOVIA education moved to the new building on 1920 in Salemba road no.6 because of unappropriated of the old building for medical education, but the boarding house was still there. STOVIA building was used for MULO education (Junior High School), AMS (Senior High School), & the school of pharmacist.

In Japan imperialism era, the building was used for ex-Dutch soldiers on 1942 – 1945. After Indonesia independence, 1945 – 1973, the building was used for Ambonese.
Ex-STOVIA building is the history building because it is the place which was the first National Movement Association, Budi Utomo born on May 20, 1908. In April 1973, Jakarta government restored the building. After the restoration, this building was legally used as National Resurgence Building by President Soeharto on May 20, 1974. The memorial room of Budi Utomo in STOVIA era is used for anatomical room. In this room, Budi Utomo Association was born.
On December 12, 1983, the National Resurgence Building was legalized as cultural preserve. While on September 1992, all of the office area were moved regarding museum development. On December 13, 2001, National Resurgence Museum was in charge of Cultural & Tourism Department.

The most impressive moment for me is to know more about the national patriot against imperialism. After went around the rooms of the museum, we took a rest for a while, drink at the terrace & out for lunch. After that, we backed home bringing the secondhand clothes from Mrs.Kalangi which we left at the receptionist while we went around the museum.
