Children Learning Community is a community based on alternative education for the children in Cakung, East Jakarta and in Sarang Tupai, Ciawi, Bogor. The children are from the poor urban family whom their parents make a living from an empty land for farming. Alternative education become the way to conscious the parents and the children on how to be the independent human being.

LIBRARY WORKSHOP

During 17-25 Oct 2009, there was an Indonesian Library and Publisher Expo 2009 at Istora Senayan. I attended a library workshop which was held on Thursday, 22 October 2009 at 1.00pm. This workshop provided information about managing a library which was conducted by a lady who works at Kompas newspaper. I do not recall her name.
Before the trainer elaborated the meaning of a library, she explained that a library is a place to keep informative materials such as books, CDs, pamphlets, newspapers, magazines, etc. A library should be managed in certain ways to provide benefits to public. It is necessary to create a conducive environment to encourage people to be life-time learners.
Objectives of a library are to encourage and increase one’s interest in reading, to create a reading habit, to introduce source of knowledge/science and to encourage group-learning process. Reading in groups may assist togetherness and team work as well. It is believed, that reading habit can trigger the growth of a child brain cells too.
She explained that to create a reading habit, it is necessary to supply good quality reading materials and to provide positive role model such as enthusiasm in reading to children since young age. The functions of a library itself are as education and information provider as well as a recreational facility. The aim of a library is to provide access to public to knowledge and education and to decrease illiteracy.
There are two kinds of library collections, book and non-book collections. Non-book collections comprise of regular issues, pamphlets, booklets, paper-clippings, maps, audio visual, etc.
The most important part of this workshop for me is how to manage a library such as
• Book registration
Each book has its own registration number and year of publishing. If the library has several copies of a book with the same title, each book has its own unique registration number. For example, 001/2007, 002/2007.
• List of Registration
In the list of registration, there are registration number, date of registration, name of author, title of material, place of publishing, city of publishing and year of publishing.
• Book classification
A library can create its own code of classification for example, FA for Children Story class, FN for Novel class. Or, children can choose color to code the books such as Green for children story class, Red for comics.
• Catalogue Record
The purpose of having catalogue record is to assist readers to find the book they want.
The trainer advised some creative programs to be held to increase readers’ interests towards library. Some of the programs are lending books, story-telling, movie sessions, story-writing contests, drawings and more.
I found this workshop is very useful especially to create a mini library in Cakung. It is our responsibility to develop children’s interest to reading.
WORKSHOP PERPUSTAKAAN

Pada tanggal 17 s/d 25 Oktober 2009, di Istora Senayan diadakan pameran Indonesia Library and Publisher Expo 2009. Saya menghadiri acara workshop perpustakaan pada hari Kamis 22 Oktober 2009 pukul 13.00 WIB. Workshop ini membahas mengenai cara mengelola perpustakaan dan taman bacaan. Yang di sampaikan oleh seorang ibu yang bekerja di Kompas, namun saya lupa namanya.
Sebelumnya dijelaskan apa yang dimaksud dengan perpustakaan. Menurutnya perpustakaan itu adalah suatu tempat untuk menyimpan bahan pustaka (buku, CD, pamflet, koran, majalah ,dll) dan dapat dikelola sedemikian rupa sehingga dapat bermanfaat bagi khalayak banyak. Mengapa perpustakaan, untuk menciptakan lingkungan yang kondusif sehingga dapat mendorong seseorang untuk menjadi manusia pembelajar sepanjang hayat.
Adapun manfaat perpustakaan adalah untuk menanamkan minat membaca, mengenal bahan bacaan yang mengandung ilmu, menanamkan sikap menghargai saling membantu dalam proses pembelajaran, dan membaca bersama dapat dijadikan ajang mempererat kebersamaan. Selain itu budaya membaca dapat merangsang sel otak terhadap anak.
Di jelaskan tips menciptakan lingkungan membaca, yaitu dengan cara menyediakan bahan-bahan bacaan dan memberikan contoh senang membaca terhadap anak. Fungsi dari perpustakaan itu sendiri adalah sebagai sarana Edukasi(pendidikan), membarikan informasi, dan sebagai sarana rekreasi. Tujuan dari perpustakaan itu sendiri adalah membarikan kemudahan akses kepada masyarakat, memperluas akses pendidikan terhadap masyarakat dan mendukung gerakan pemberantasan buta aksara.
Jenis-jenis koleksi yang dapat ditaruh di perpustakaan adalah jenis koleksi buku dan non buku. Yang termasuk koleksi-koleksi non buku dapat berupa terbitan berkala, pamflet, booklet, kliping, peta, audio visual dan lain-lain.
Bagian yang menurut saya penting adalah cara mengelola koleksi perpustakaan yaitu:
• Registrasi buku.
Yang perlu dicatat dalam registrasi adalah nomor induk untuk setiap buku(walau judulnya sama) yang dilengkapi dengan tahun pencatattan, mis: 001/2007, 002/2007
• Daftar Registrasi.
Yang perlu dicatat no induk, tanggal pencatatan, nama pengarang, judul buku, tempat penerbit, kota penerbit dan tahun terbit.
• Klasifikasi buku.
Klasifikasi dapat digunakan dengan membuat kode sendiri. Contoh: Cerita Anak = FA, Novel = FN. Atau untuk anak-anak dapat menggunakan kode menggunakan warna. Contoh: Hijau = cerita anak, merah = cerita bergambar.
• Katalogisasi.
Gunanya untuk mempermudah pembaca mencari buku yang diinginkan.
Dalam perpustakaan sebaiknya diadakan program yang dapat menarik minat para pembacanya. Seperti layanan peminjaman buku, baca cerita/ mendongeng, pemutaran film, lomba menulis cerita, menggambar dan masih banyak lagi.
Workshop yang saya ikuti ini sangat berguna sekali untuk perkembangan taman bacaan di daerah Cakung. Sudah menjadi tanggung jawab bersama bagi kita untuk mengembangkan minat membaca bagi anak-anak.
Susi's Story
On Sunday 18.10.2009, Ester, Susi, Yana, Mala, Indri, and Kak A'ung made a study table. Kak A'ung explained the size of the table was 35cmx40cm. After that we cut the woods and we distributed the job. All girls felt exhausted.
Me and Kak A'ung went to buy the woods at Gang Bunung as Jaka and Ester suggested us. When we got there, we were frightened as we met a big dog. Me, Jaka and Ester went to Kak A'ung to ask his protection. Kak A'ung was very happy as he felt like a celebrity.
Before we entered the wood shop, me and Ester prayed, hoping we would get the right wood as we walked so far from Jalan Cempaka 6 until Gang Bingung. We bought AQUA mineral water and walked again/ because we couldn't find the right wood.
And then we found a chair, we stopped and had a rest there. Kak A'ung asked: We have drunk the water so why are you still holding the bottle? And Ester said, "Because we are not supposed to throw the rubbish irresponsibly"
Since we couldn't find the right wood, we went back to the learning house.
KETRAMPILAN MEMBUAT MEJA BELAJAR

Pada Minggu, 18 Oktober 2009 Ester, Susi, Yana, Mala, Indri, dan Kak A’ung membuat meja belajar. Kak A’ung menjelaskan panjang mejanya 35 cm dan lebarnya 40 cm. Setelah itu kami mulai menggergaji kayunya. Kami pun membagi tugas. Yang perempuan merasa kelelahan.
Saya dan Kak A’ung mau membeli kayu pertama-tama di Gang Bingung sesuai dengan saran Jaka dan Ester. Kak Aung ikut saja. Sampai disana, saya ketakutan karena kami bertemu anjing besar. Saya, Jaka & Ester langsung memeluk Kak Aung. Kak Aung jadi senang karena dipeluk banyak anak, seperti artis terkenal saja.
Sebelum masuk ke toko kayu, saya dan Ester berdoa semoga kami dapat kayu yang diinginkan karena kami sudah jalan jauh dari jalan Cempaka VI sampai gang Bingung. Kami beli minum air mineral aqua, lalu berjalan lagi, karena tidak dapat kayu yang kami cari.
Ada kursi kosong, kami berhenti dan istirahat sebentar. ‘Kok minuman udah habis, botolnya masih dipegang terus?’ Tanya Kak Aung. ‘Iya, kita kan tidak boleh buang sampah sembarangan,’ kata Ester. Karena tidak berhasil dapat kayu, akhirnya kami kembali pulang ke rumah belajar.
Kartini’s story
On Sunday, 11.10.2009, all Cakung Sawah and Cakung Sampah community kids held a health community service. Before we started it, Kak Debby did the nails health inspection, and then cutting nails and also washing hands. After that, we sang for a while before we drank milk and while we were waiting for the doctor.
After a couple of hours, the doctor came. Me, Susi, Yana , Ondo, Yohanes, Jaka, Kiki, and Kak Aung helped carrying the medicines which were packed in a box. Besides medicines, there were also Ultra Milk and Milo milk powder.
We began the service after 11.30am. It was started with the guests introducing them selves. After that, we registered to the registration area. The person responsible for the registration was Yana . Before, Ana has had actually registered in her area where she lived with everyone who lived there.
From 36 Cakung Sawah patients, which consist of parents and children, there are many different complaints. Mostly are about difficulty to eat. There are some who are suffering from toothache, respiratory problem, headaches, and itchy skin because of skin disease or allergy, coughs, and ear problems.
We registered to Doctor Budi’s assistant, Kak Yosi. After we registered, we met the doctor for a consultation. Doctor then gave us a prescription. We took this prescription to the medicine area that was managed by Bu Sadiah, helped by Kak Yosi.
We had to queue to get the medicine, after that we went to see Bude Ika who was distributing chocolate powder sachet and Ultra Milk. Each of us got 3 sachet and 1 box of Ultra milk.
After doctor consultation and after we got the medicine and milk, all mothers of Cakung Sampah chose some clothes from the previous exhibition that was held. Clothes can be taken for free. After it was all done, we tidied up the place and all the medicine that was given. After the doctor and all medical staff finished their break, they went home.
We all accompanied the doctor and friends to the car. After that we went home to have a rest before we continued our study.
PELAYANAN KESEHATAN UMUM

Pada Minggu, 11 Oktober 2009, anak-anak Cakung sawah & Cakung sampah mengadakan pelayanan kesehatan umum. Sebelum memulai acara, kami semua diperiksa kuku oleh Kak Debby, lalu gunting kuku dan mencuci tangan. Setelah selesai, kami menyanyi sejenak sebelum minum susu dan sambil menunggu dokter.
Setelah beberapa jam kemudian, dokter datang. Saya, Susi, Yana, Ondo, Yohanes, Jaka, Kiki, dan Kak Aung membantu membawa obat-obatan yang disimpan dalam kardus. Selain obat-obatan, ada pula susu Ultra dan coklat bubuk Milo.
Kami memulai acara sudah pukul 11.30 WIB. Acara dimulai dengan tamu memperkenalkan diri. Setelah itu, kami mendaftar pada bagian pendaftaran. Penanggungjawab bagian pendaftaran adalah Yana. Sebelumnya, Ana sudah melakukan pendaftaran kesehatan warga satu per satu beserta keluhannya. Dari 36 pasien Cakung sawah, yang terdiri dari orang tua dan anak-anak, ada bermacam keluhan yang tercatat. Rata-rata keluhannya kurang nafsu makan. Ada beberapa yang menderita sakit gigi, sesak nafas, pusing-pusing, dan gatal-gatal karena sakit kulit atau pun alergi, batuk-batuk, dan keluhan sakit kuping.
Kami mendaftar pada asisten Dokter Budi, yaitu Kak Yosi. Setelah mendaftar, kami konsultasi pada dokter. Dokter pun memberikan resep obat. Resep obat ini kami bawa ke bagian obat-obatan, yang dipegang oleh Bu Sadiah dibantu Kak Yosi. Kami mesti antri untuk mendapatkan obat, setelah itu menuju Bude Ika yang membagikan coklat bubuk sachet dan susu Ultra. Masing-masing mendapatkan 3 sachet dan satu kotak susu Ultra.
Selesai periksa dan mendapatkan obat dan susu, para ibu Cakung sampah memilih baju-baju sisa bazaar sebelumnya. Baju-baju boleh diambil gratis. Begitu semuanya selesai, kami membereskan tempat dan obat-obatan yang diberikan. Setelah dokter & para petugas medis selesai istirahat & makan snack serta minum, mereka pun pulang. Kami semua mengantarkan dokter & teman-teman menuju mobil. Setelah itu, kami pulang ke rumah masing-masing untuk istirahat siang dulu sebelum melanjutkan belajar di rumah belajar.
Gio, my little brother

He is more than one year old of age.
He cries if mom left him for work.
Gio is always crying whenever feels thirsty or want to have milk.
Gio really loves to drink. He does not want to sleep if no one accompanies him.
He only wants to play, if he is feeling full.
If he is upset, Gio does not want to do anything.
If he has some food, he becomes quite stingy, does not want to share to everyone.
If Umi, his sister, is studying, he likes to tease her. He likes to play with his big sister.
If he is happy, Gio always laughs.
If he is sick, he does not want to be disturbed. He becomes cranky.

Various activities on Sunday

On Sunday, 18 October 2009, Cakung Children Community organized several activities. There were children nutrition improvement (through drinking milk), study together with Kak Lisa and several other activities such as carpentry. We learned to make a study desk.
First, we gathered at Learning Home to drink milk. We drink milk every Sunday before studying. Then, we studied together with Kak Lisa. We discussed our dreams and what we should do to achieve our dreams. We continued to draw what kind of person we want to be.
After studying together with Kak Lisa, we took a break for awhile. We had a Bazaar during our break. There were so many different kinds of things for sale like clothes, instant noodle, shampoo, soap, etc.
We then continued our activities with craft session with Kak Aung. He has measured the size for making a desk. Material supplier delivered the multiplex and timber which was ordered by Kak Aung.
We started measuring the timber and marked it with pencil before cutting it with saw. The multiplex was divided into 3, we lined it with pencil to make a correct, straight and neat cut. We needed 8 legs for each desk, so there would be 24 legs for 3 desks.
It was late afternoon however, we had not finished making the desks yet. So, we decided to split the group into 2, each group has 6 children, to share the jobs. Each group should cut 2 legs for next week assignment. We then cleaned up the room, collected all timbers and put them outside the Learning Home. We got ready to go home.
ANEKA KEGIATAN DI HARI MINGGU

Pada Minggu, 18 Oktober 2009, kami, Komunitas Anak Cakung mengadakan berbagai Kegiatan. Ada Kegiatan peningkatan gizi anak (minum susu), belajar bersama Kak Lisa, dan kegiatan ketrampilan bertukang. Kami belajar membuat meja belajar.
Pertama-tama, kami berkumpul di rumah belajar untuk minum susu setiap hari Minggu, sebelum mulai belajar. Setelah itu, kami belajar bersama Kak Lisa lebih dulu, sebelum mulai Kegiatan ketrampilan. Kami membahas tentang cita-cita dan apa yang mesti dilakukan untuk meraih cita-cita kemudian dilanjutkan menggambar orang sesuai dengan apa yang kami inginkan.
Selesai belajar bersama Kak Lisa, kami istirahat sebentar, kemudian kami memakai waktu istirahat kami untuk Kegiatan bazaar. Ada macam-macam barang yang dijual, seperti baju, rok, celana, mie instant, shampoo, sabun, dan lain-lain.
Kemudian kami melanjutkan Kegiatan kami dengan Kegiatan ketrampilan bersama Kak Aung. Ia menentukan ukuran yang akan kami buat, lalu kemudian tukang bangunan datang mengantar multipleks dan kayu yang dibeli Kak Aung.
Kami mulai mengukur kayu dan menandainya dengan pensil, kemudian memotong dengan gergaji. Multipleks dibagi 3, kami garisi dengan pensil agar rapih dan rata bila dipotong dan tidak salah. Kaki meja yang digunakan ada 8 potong, maka dari 3 meja belajar diperlukan 24 potong kaki meja.
Hari sudah sore sementara kerja kami belum selesai. Akhirnya kami bagi tugas dari 2 kelompok yang masing-masing terdiri dari 6 anak untuk memotong masing-masing 2 potong kaki meja sebagai tugas minggu depan. Kami pun beres-beres untuk pulang merapikan kayu-kayu dan meletakkan di sisi luar rumah belajar.
Public Health Activity

On Sunday, 11 October 2009, we had general practitioners from Rumah Sehat Ciliwung Merdeka (RSCM) visiting us. Initially, the visit was scheduled on 10.00am but it was then delayed until 11.30am. They came by rented-mikrolet and motorbikes. They brought some medicines and food. Some of us helped them to carry the medicines and food as their car could not enter the Learning Home. Jaka, Yana, Yohanes and Mala helped them to bring some stuff to the Learning Home.
We gathered to welcome our guests. We introduce ourselves and had a chat with them. We then provided a list of patients for Dr. Budi to examine. There were 36 patients from Cakung Sawah and 15 patients from Cakung Sampah. They were children and elderly people.
Children and mothers received a priority to be examined. We all queued to be called by our name. Big children went to Zidan’s house for study, supervised by Kak Aung. We all learned to draw a desk and to list necessary items to create a desk.
After studying, we went to the Learning Home to be examined by Dr. Budi. First, we needed to tell our health condition and illness. Then, doctor assistant wrote the type of illness and gave it to Dr. Budi to produce a prescription. We then gave the prescription to Kak Yosi and Bu Sadiah to get the medicine.
They called our name and gave the medicine. We then paid them health contribution of Rp. 2.000, which put in a box and noted by Yana. After that, we had Milo drink and Ultra milk carton from Bude Ika.
Examination was completed for all at around 13.30. All medical practitioner guests from RSCM had to go as their duty was done. We all thanked them for the time and effort and said goodbye.
KEGIATAN PELAYANAN KESEHATAN UMUM

Pada Minggu, 11 Oktober 2009, kami kedatangan dokter umum dari Rumah Sehat Ciliwung Merdeka (RSCM). Acara yang dijadwalkan pukul 10.00 WIB ternyata mundur hingga pukul 11.30 WIB. Kakak-kakak dari RSCM datang naik motor & sewa mikrolet. Mereka membawa obat-obatan dan snack. Sebagian dari kami, anak-anak besar membantu mengangkut obat-obatan dan snack karena mobil tidak bisa masuk ke depan rumah belajar. Jaka, Yana, Yohanes, dan Mala membantu mereka membawa barang-barang ke rumah belajar.
Kami, anak-anak sudah siap berkumpul menyambut kedatangan kakak-kakak dari RSCM. Acara dimulai dengan ramah tamah, perkenalan, dan kami memberikan daftar pasien yang akan diperiksa oleh dokter Budi. Dari Cakung Sawah, ada 36 pasien, sedangkan dari Cakung Sampah ada 15 pasien yang terdiri dari anak-anak dan orang tua.
Anak-anak kecil dan para Ibu diberikan kesempatan lebih dulu. Kami antri dipanggil namanya sesuai absen supaya tertib. Sedangkan anak-anak besar belajar di rumah Zidan didampingi Kak Aung. Kami belajar menggambar meja dan menulis perlengkapan apa saja yang dibutuhkan untuk membuat meja.
Selesai belajar, giliran kami diperiksa oleh dokter Budi. Pertama kita harus menceritakan keluhan penyakit apa yang kita alami, kemudian asisten dokter menulis jenis penyakitnya dan diberikan pada dokter Budi untuk diberikan resep obat. Setelah itu kami berikan resep obat itu pada Kak Yosi dan Bu Sadiah untuk mendapatkan obat.
Nama kami dipanggil, obat diberikan kemudian kami membayar iuran kesehatan sebesar Rp.2.000,- yang dimasukkan dalam kotak & dicatat oleh Yana. Setelah itu, kami diberikan susu bubuk Milo dan susu kotak Ultra oleh Bude Ika.
Waktu menunjukkan pukul 13.30 selesai diperiksa semua warga. Kakak-kakak dari RSCM harus pulang karena tugas mereka sudah selesai. Kami semua mengucapkan terimakasih atas waktu dan tenaga yang telah diberikan dan mengucapkan selamat tinggal.
