Progress Report of Children Learning Community in July 2017

Dear friends,

We are grateful to God and to our loyal friends who supported the activity of children learning community in Cakung and Sarang Tupai, Ciawi throughout July 2017.

Mrs. Tjandra, Mrs. Lanny, Mrs. Vera, Rachel, and Novi accompanied the Sarang Tupai’s children on their study. Meanwhile big sister Ari, big sister Intan, Mrs Mar’ah,big sister Indri, big brother Diki, and big sister Debby accompanied the Cakung’s children.

Cakung’s and Sarang Tupai’s children began their learning activity in the first week of July.

In the beginning of July, only a few children showed up at the learning centers. Some students preferred to stay home and enjoyed their holidays.

Both Cakung and Sarang Tupai experienced the same situation.

A few children who attended the lesson learned with great enthusiasm. Some facilitators who were still in school were also eager to help their juniors during school break.

We thank facilitators, volunteers and surrounding community who relentlessly gave their time, efforts, finances and place for this learning program.

Library activity ran as usual, except library day off in the last week of June 2017. We still need to register the new arrival 2017 book collection.  We just finished reregistering all the previous year book collections.

We thank the library personnel for their effort and dedication.

Students of Elementary, Middle School, High School and Vocational High School went back to school. They began their new academic year in the middle of July 2017.

They all moved up to the next grade. Some students went up to Middle School’s level and some went up to High School’s level.

Since the beginning of July, we have prepared school needs including text books, writing tablets and stationaries. Beside routine transportation fee, we have also prepared some budget for their school fees, uniforms and annually activities fee.

We thank our dearest friend who dedicate their financial resources for this scholarship program. Your financial dedication will have valuable impact for the future of these children.

Throughout July 2017, we prepared healthy delicatessen such as “es kulkul”, cold chocolate cover banana; ketupat sayur, steam rice wrap in palm leaves with vegetable and chicken; pizza with sausage; sticky rice wrap in thin pancakes top with liquid chocolate; snake fruits; fruit cocktail; and “Jasuke” steam corn top with condense milk and cheddar cheese for Cakung’s and Sarang Tupai’s children.

We also express our gratitude to the facilitators and the community of Cakung and Sarang Tupai who helped us with making healthy dishes throughout July 2017. We thanked Mrs Tjandra who prepared healthy delicatessen for Sarang Tupai’s children.

In the second week of July 2017, we held cooperative effort meeting right after learning session. Most of the cooperative member came to the meeting. Cooperative member met to decide the price of package of staple food. Because staple food was still in high demand due to long holidays, therefore, the cooperative decided to wait until the price drop down. They decided to begin the cooperative activity in August 2017. All members also encouraged to deposit their initial payment.

We held an annually Character Building workshop for Sarang Tupai’s and Cakung’s children on Saturday, 30th July 2017 at the learning facility.

We had this anually activity since 2009.

This year big sister Alvie prepared the theme of “Anti Bullying”. Big sister Alvie and Tanaya presented the material to the children of stage 3 and 4. There were forty five Cakung’s and Sarang Tupai’s children attending the workshop.

Workshop began around 10 am. They divided the participant into groups which were mixed between Cakung’s and Sarang Tupai’s participant. Children introduced each other before began the activity.

For ice breaking, they were given the task to put together a group slogan. Each group had unique slogan to boost their team spirit.

After that big sister Alvie explained about bullying, the reason people bullied others, the impacts of bullying to the victim and society.

The actions taken when we have been face this condition.

There are several types of bullying, such as verbal bullying, direct contact bullying and cyber bullying. Some examples of verbal bullying are cursing, condescending comments and threats. Some examples of direct contact bullying are physical abuse, pushing, hair pulling, pinching or any wrong intention physical contact.  Cyber bullying usually happen in the internet or social media. The victim will experience mental abuse through social pressure.

The victims will get depressed, loss of appetite, loss of interest in school and the height of that, the victim might be suicidal.

Friends need to respect each other. In school or other places, friends need to be kind to each other, value the differences and live in harmony.

Victims need to report bullying conduct to teachers and parents. Report can be escalated to the education minister office. Victim might also need to see psychologist or Yayasan Pulih, an organization equipped to handle bullying victims.

During the introduction of bullying, each group was given a sheet of poster size paper, a heart shape paper and human shape papers that represents the participants.

Children were asked to write words that use to degrade their friends. After filling up the heart with words, children were asked to tear the heart shape paper symbolized a wounded heart of bullying victim.

After destroying the heart shape paper, children were asked to put the heart back to the original shape. Children had difficulty putting the heart back.

Big sister Alvie stated that once the heart of a bullying victim was destroyed, it was very hard to put them back. The wounded heart could not be brought back to a cheerful heart.

Children encouraged being kind to others. They wrote things and reasons for being kind to others.

Each group colored and decorated their poster sheet with coloring pencils and markers.

Before lunch time, facilitators judge each group based on degree of participation.

From six groups, facilitators picked three groups for their participation. They got some snacks as present in their group participation.

Children enjoyed each other company. And at the end of the workshop, children took pictures with big sister Alvie and Tanaya.

We thank big sister Alvie and Tanaya for these character development workshop. We valued their attention and effort.

We also thank Mrs Herna Rusli for providing Cakung’s children mean of transportation. They rode the bus to Sarang Tupai, Ciawi.

We thank the mothers and facilitators of Cakung and Sarang Tupai for preparing breakfast, lunch and snacks.

We hope our joint effort will continue further.
